N1  -  In 1970, the lower-case Greek letter lambda was chosen as the symbol of the  New York chapter of the Gay Activists Alliance for its meaning in physics for ‘wavelength’. In 1974 it was officially declared the international symbol for gay and lesbian rights by the International Gay Rights Congress in Edinburgh. The rainbow flag – originally containing two extra colours, pink and turquoise – was designed for the Gay Freedom Day Parade 1978 in San Francisco in order to replace the pink triangle associated with Nazi oppression.
N1  -  The Tainted Blood Tragedy describes the infection of haemophiliacs and other transfusion recipients with HIV and the hepatitis C virus (HCV) through blood products. The term ‘Tainted Blood Scandal’ is used for the period where effective virus deactivation methods were available but not applied. Both viruses lead to a significant higher mortality among haemophiliacs.
N1  -  Flagging is a way of dancing by moving flags in a rhythmic fashion, developed from fan dancing in the late 1970s in the leather scene of San Francisco. As AIDS took its toll on the community, only a few masters of these arts remained. A rebirth took place in the mid-1990s in New York and the East Coast from where it spread to the rest of the country, to Belo Horizonte and further into Brazil.
